Former Premier League star, 38, starts new job after being declared bankrupt

EX-LIVERPOOL and Newcastle midfielder Danny Guthrie is the new technical director of a football academy in the UAE.

The 38-year-old’s new job comes three years after he was declared bankrupt, having failed to repay £100,000 he borrowed from a friend.

Businessman Chris Heath loaned Guthrie the cash to help him buy a house.

But he was never repaid – even after the house was sold.

Heath said he felt “very let down” and “had no choice but to make him bankrupt”.

Guthrie accepted a six-year bankruptcy order which will run until May 2028.

The former midfielder had the world at his feet when he was an up-and-comer at Liverpool, having previously spent time in Manchester United’s academy.

And he set Newcastle back £2.5million when they managed to lure him from Anfield in 2008.

The latter years of Guthrie’s career were a lot less lucrative.

Spells in Indonesia and Iceland preceded his retirement, and the bankruptcy order that followed.

Guthrie has taken on a number of roles since hanging up his boots.

His latest venture has seen him start work as technical director at Al Hadha Football Academy in the UAE.

He said: “I’m delighted to have joined Al Hadha to share my experience and my knowledge with the next generation.

“I feel that is my duty and I can’t wait to get started. The academy has huge ambitions and I’m really, really proud to be a part of it.”

Guthrie’s address was listed in Dubai when he was declared bankrupt.

Earlier this year he was unveiled as a coach at IFG Phoenix City – a club in the UAE’s football pyramid which integrates sport and education.

Guthrie has also been providing private coaching through his own initiative, The Overachievers’ Club.
