Scunthorpe have since released a statement hitting out at the guilty party.

The club reiterated the importance of match day revenue as it helps fund the running of the club.

It read: “Scunthorpe United Football Club has discovered that counterfeit currency was used at the Attis Arena on matchday by a home supporter.

“The use of fake notes is a criminal offence and has a detrimental impact on the club.

“Every pound spent on matchdays helps to support the running of the football club, our staff, our community programmes and the matchday experience for supporters.

“Counterfeit money directly harms these efforts and places additional strain on club resources.

“We are treating this matter extremely seriously.

“The incident has been reported, and we are working closely with relevant authorities to investigate.

“Additional checks and procedures will be introduced across all points of sale within the stadium to help identify counterfeit notes and prevent further incidents.

“We ask all supporters to remain vigilant and to understand the importance of using legitimate currency when making purchases at the stadium.

“Scunthorpe United Football Club will not tolerate fraudulent activity and will take appropriate action where necessary.

“We would like to remind supporters that any individual found attempting to use counterfeit currency will face police involvement and potential club sanctions, including banning orders.

“Scunthorpe United prides itself on being a community club built on trust, respect, and integrity.

“We thank the vast majority of our supporters who continue to act with honesty and integrity and who play a vital role in supporting the club.”

Scunthorpe dropped out of the EFL in 2022 when they were relegated from League Two.

This was then immediately followed by a successive relegation to the National League North before they bounced back last year.

The Iron now sit 5th in the National League having won four of their previous five games.
