BARCELONA have quietly said goodbye to former Southampton star Oriol Romeu.
The former Chelsea and Southampton star had his contract terminated by the club in the final days of the transfer window.
According to AS, Romeu’s employment with the Camp Nou outfit ended on August 28.
That is despite the 33-year-old having a contract with the club running to June 30, 2026.
However, the two parties are said to have reached an “economic agreement” over his exit a year early.
Strangely, there was no official statement from either the club or the player announcing the move.
Romeu had reportedly received offers from a number of clubs over the summer, including Girona.
In the days before the window shut, Romeu was unable to find a new club.
But the Turkish and Saudi Arabian transfer windows remain open for him.
The window for the Super Lig does not close until September 12.
Elsewhere, according to Fifa the window for Portuguese clubs does not close until September 15, while the Saudi Pro League does not shut until September 23, again according to Fifa.
Romeu came through the Blaugrana academy and into the first team in 2011.
He then joined Chelsea and was with the Stamford Bridge club for four years, having loans with Valencia and Stuttgart.
The midfielder joined Southampton in 2015, going on to play 256 games for the Saints before leaving in 2022 to play with Girona.
He returned to Barcelona on a three-year deal in 2023, making 37 appearances before returning to Girona on loan last season.
