Former Champions League giants could see stadium thrown out of World Cup 2030 with work not even started

A FORMER Champions League stadium set to stage 2030 World Cup games could soon lose its hosting rights.

The 2030 instalment of the Fifa World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Nine Spanish stadiums are set to host games during the tournament, which will also feature three matches in South America.

The revamped Nou Camp is one of the standout Spanish stadiums, as well as the Bernabeu and the Wanda Metropolitano.

The Riazor, the home of former Champions League club Deportivo La Coruna, is also set to host games after being pre-selected by FIFA.

But there is one small problem: proposed renovations to the ground haven’t started.

And to make matters worse, the works are being held up by the fact that there isn’t even a renovation design in place.

It’s unclear if the renovation will go ahead as funds previously set aside for the works have disappeared from the city’s 2026 budget.

The £1.3million initially set aside was deemed essential for the renovation, which is expected to cost a total of £3m, to get underway.

The Partido Popular are concerned by the lack of a stadium design with less than a year left before Fifa’s final stadium evaluation.

An official stated it was “very late” in comparison to other cities vying for hosting rights.

At present, Fifa’s final valuation is slated to take place in September.

And if there are no signs of progress on the Riazor revamp, the hopes of those living in La Coruna, nicknamed the ‘Glass City’, of watching World Cup football on their doorstep will end up being shattered.
