Former Browns QB hints at NFL comeback from retirement amid Cleveland’s competition

Former Browns QB hints at NFL comeback from retirement amid Cleveland’s competition

The Cleveland Browns already have more quarterbacks than they know what to do with.

That hasn’t stopped a former NFL star who spent time with the Browns, as well as the Ravens and Washington, to hint at a possible comeback out of retirement.

No, it’s unlikely that comeback would lead to Cleveland, but it’s still a bit of irony.

That QB is Robert Griffin III.

RG3 recently posted on TikTok the caption: “It might be time to come out of retirement (eyes emoji).”

With that caption was a video of Griffin slinging a football around.

Griffin was once the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by Washington, just behind Andrew Luck.

In his rookie season, he had a 9-6 record as a starter. Injuries quickly sent him on a path toward disappointment, though. He was never quite the same dual-threat shining star again.

RG3 ended up playing in games across three seasons for Washington, three more seasons for Baltimore and also threw in a season for Cleveland.

Griffin’s lone season with the Browns came in 2016, after he missed the entire 2015 season with injury.

He actually started five games for the Browns, one of 40 QBs to start for Cleveland since 1999. He went 1-4 in those games, throwing two touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 59.2 percent of his passes. He also ran for two TDs.

Griffin is 35 years old, five years younger than current Browns QB competition competitor Joe Flacco, who is 40.

There are teams in the NFL who could still use a veteran quarterback presence, but given that Griffin hasn’t played since 2020, it’s not clear that he’s the answer here.

He’ll likely keep hinting at a comeback, though, in case one franchise wants to give him a shot to throw the football professionally a bit longer.
