Former 8 million potential Steelers Pro Bowl quarterback target predicted to sign with Saints

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still on the hunt for a starting quarterback. Though the team added Will Howard in Round 6 of the draft, the Ohio State signal-caller isn’t ready to be a starting signal-caller yet and needs a year to learn from an experienced veteran.

Pittsburgh is looking to add a veteran to be the starter in 2025. Aaron Rodgers has been linked to the Steelers all offseason, but there’s a chance the future Hall of Famer could retire instead of signing with Mike Tomlin’s squad.

If Rodgers doesn’t sign in Pittsburgh, Carson Wentz is another potential target for the Steelers. The 2016 No.2 overall pick hasn’t played much over the last two seasons, but he does have a ton of experience and a 47-46-1 record as a starter in the NFL.

Wentz would be a nice backup plan for Pittsburgh if Rodgers ditches them, but Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton predicts the former Philadelphia Eagle will ink a deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Perhaps rookie second-rounder Tyler Shough, Jake Haener and Rattler bring out the best in one another in a training camp battle. Still, the Saints should add veteran competition to challenge the young candidates. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Haener is dealing with an oblique injury. Wentz can push the young talent at the position. He could also provide a spark in the passing game with his big arm and ability to extend plays.

After a failed stint with the Washington Commanders in 2022, Wentz has spent the last two years as a backup on contenders. He was the No.2 quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023 and was Patrick Mahomes’ backup with the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

The Saints’ quarterback situation is a complete mess. Derek Carr recently retired due to a shoulder injury, and though the team has two young signal-callers with potential in Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler, they should look to add a veteran to the position group.

Wentz will be cheap to sign and could compete for the starting spot with Shough and Rattler. The former No.2 overall pick would keep New Orleans somewhat competitive and could flourish in an offense with a few star playmakers, such as wide receiver Chris Olave and running back Alvin Kamara.

For the Steelers, missing out on Wentz wouldn’t be a big deal. However, with the uncertainty surrounding the Rodgers’ situation, Pittsburgh should consider all potential quarterback options.
