‘Football is dead now’ – Fans furious as VAR ‘bails out’ Robert Sanchez howler thanks to little-known rule

FANS are in uproar after Eberechi Eze’s free-kick against Chelsea was disallowed because of wall encroachment.

The England star blasted Crystal Palace in front early on with the ball going through the hands of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

But VAR intervened because Marc Guehi infringed on the Chelsea wall.

The referee announced the reason behind the decision, saying: “After review, away number six is less than one metre away from the wall as the shot is taken.

“Therefore, it’s an indirect free kick and a disallowed goal.”

Players are prohibited from encroaching on a defensive ball at the moment a free-kick is taken.

Law 13 on The FA’s website states: “If, when a free kick is taken, an attacking team player is less than 1 m (1 yd) from a ‘wall’ formed by three or more defending team players, an indirect free kick is awarded.”

Sanchez’s blushes were spared as Eze’s rocket bypassed the wall and went straight through his hands.
