Floyd Schofield Sr. says he’s hoping that his son, Schofield Jr., can face the winner of the July 12th fight between WBO lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson and William Zepeda. He thinks Schofield Jr. (19-0, 13 KOs) can beat both, and he wants him to have the opportunity.
Alalshikh’s Next Fight Agenda
The chances of Schofield getting either of them are slim, especially if Shakur is the one who is victorious in that fight. It’s believed that Turki Alalshikh will set up a unification fight between Stevenson and WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis next. He’s not going to be looking to match him against the big puncher Schofield, and have him ruin his plans.
“We’re looking forward to it. We’re 100% looking forward to it, and people don’t do certain things to other people to stop them from making it to the ring if they’re not scared,” said Floyd Schofield Sr. to Fight Hub TV about wanting the winner of Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda.
If Zepeda wins, an immediate rematch with Shakur will likely occur because there’s too much money being invested in his career for him not to avenge the loss. Although Shakur isn’t entertaining to watch, and likely not capable of beating fighters like Schofield, Andy Cruz, or Abdullah Mason, he’s more popular than that. Turki likes boxers, and he’ll make sure the rematch with Zepeda happens immediately.
Stevenson’s Hand Injury Concerns
“We hope Shakur wins, but we also want Zepeda to win. Whoever wins, we should have the fight against,” said Schofield. “So, it really doesn’t bother us who wins. But if Shakur’s hands don’t hold up, he’s going to lose.”
It would be better for Schofield if Stevenson wins because it’ll allow him to show that he was never afraid of him. He was sick when he pulled out of his scheduled fight against Shakur in Riyadh last February. Also, Stevenson is more popular than Zepeda, and Turki Alalshikh has already said he would be “very upset” if he’s knocked out on July 12th because he has “big plans” for him.
“So, his hands have got to hold up against a pressure fighter that throws 100 punches a round. So, that’s all it depends on if Shakur’s hands are going to hold up. I don’t care how much he boxes. If his hands are hurting, he ain’t going to throw too much,” said Floyd Sr. about Stevenson’s fight against Zepeda.
Even if Shakur’s hands don’t hold up, he’ll hit and run like he did in his fight against Edwin De Los Santos. He supposedly was fighting with injured hands in that fight, and he spent the entire fight tapping and moving.
The fans hated it. Stevenson doesn’t have the power or the punch output to stay in the pocket to try and match Zepeda punch for punch. So, Shakur will rely on his amateur-style fighting and count on the judges to give him the rounds.
However, the fans ringside that night at the Louis Armstrong Stadium boo Stevenson all night like they did in his fights against De Los Santos and Jeremia Nakathila, the judges may chose to score it for Zepeda. They should do that anyway, but we know Shakur is the A-side and that counts a lot.
