Floyd Schofield Sr. took to social media to explain why his son didn’t accept a deal to fight Abdullah Mason. Papa Schofield says they received a 5-year, $5 million contract from Golden Boy. He states that the choice was either to agree to the $1 million for the Mason fight or take the 5-year deal from Golden Boy. They went with the latter.
$5 Million Golden Boy Deal
“I thought I’d address the news out there about the Kid-Mason fight. Number 1, we want to fight [Abdullah] Mason, and yes, we will fight Mason, according to Golden Boy and them,” Floyd Schofield Sr. to Fighthype. “But Golden Boy has other plans. Mason offered us a million dollars. Their team over there offered us a million dollars for us to fight, but Golden Boy offered us a five-year deal for $5 million.”
I wonder if Schofield’s manager recommended they not take that deal? He probably could have gotten a much bigger deal if he’d fought Mason and beaten him.
“Guaranteed five years of employment. Guaranteed we’ll be fighting for a title soon. What would you pick? Greg Hackett is saying, ‘You ducked $2.5 [million].’ No, because I had $5 million on the table, and the team that is offering it is saying, ‘Nah.’ So, I had a choice. Are we going this side for $1 million or are we going this side for $5 million?”
This suggests Schofield Sr. didn’t have confidence in his son’s ability to defeat Abdullah Mason. Signing a long-term deal with Golden Boy for that amount is a red flag that the belief wasn’t there. If you think he can win, you let him take that fight because beating Mason would send Schofield’s stock through the roof.
“The $5 million, that’s just the minimum. That ain’t even everything. So, y’all can believe whatever you want,” said Schofield Sr. about Golden Boy’s 5-year deal for Floyd Sr. “I don’t like putting money business out there, but I figured, I’d clear the rumors. Nobody is scared of no Mason. We look forward to fighting Mason. We shared the ring with him.”
Breaking Down the Deal
Let’s break that deal down. If you figure Schofield is going to fight three times a year, he’s only making $333k per fight. That’s not a good deal. Floyd Sr. would have been better off taking the $1 million deal offered for the Abdullah Mason fight because his value would have increased if he’d won. Of course, if Papa Schofield didn’t believe his son could beat Mason, it makes sense why he turned down the offer.
“Our next opponent in June is a good one. This is a test. I can’t say who it is, but this is a good fight right here. We fresh off the bench. This is our first fight back since November. If this ain’t a step up, I don’t know what to tell y’all. I got to wait for them to announce it, but this is going to be a good fight.”
Fans aren’t expecting much from Golden Boy for Schofield. After the way Floyd Jr. performed in his last fight against Rene Tellez Giron last November, getting dropped, Golden Boy isn’t about to put Schofield in with anyone with a pulse. The icing on the cake was his pull-out at the last second with a mysterious illness for his fight against WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson last February.
“Haters keep hating. I’m loving it. And the Mama Schofield thing. Oh, it’s amazing. This is so funny,” said Floyd Sr.
