‘Favourite part of Wimbledon,’ say fans as umpire is wheeled away ‘like piece of furniture’ when rain hits

FANS enjoyed seeing an umpire wheeled away “like a piece of furniture” during a rain delay at Wimbledon.

Play was suspended on Day 6 of the year’s Championships following under an hour of action on the outside courts.

As is customary, court attendants quickly took the net down in order to get the covers on.

During this process, umpires’ chairs are wheeled off court to clear space, usually with them still sat in them.

A clip of German umpire Nico Helwerth being wheeled off No3 Court this morning has done the rounds on social media.

One fan wrote: “My favourite part of Wimbledon is when the Umpire is wheeled away like a piece of furniture.”

While a second called the scene “Iconic”.

Helwerth had been in the chair for the round three clash between Daria Kasatkina and Liudmila Samsonova.

The latter led 6-2 2-0 40-40 at the time of the rain delay.

When play finally resumed around two hours later, Samsonova picked up where she left off.

The Russian dominated the No3 Court encounter, going on to win 6-2 6-3.

Samsonova will next face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro – after the Spaniard defeated Coco Gauff’s conqueror Dayana Yastremska 6-1 2-6 6-3.
