Canelo Alvarez is receiving criticism from fans on social media today after defending his teammate, Jaime Munguia, after he was popped for coming up positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites in a test on May 4th after his win over Bruno Surace.

Munguia’s Failed PED Test

Jaime Munguia’s A-sample tested positive for his 12-round unanimous decision win over Surace on May 3rd in Riyadh.

Munguia has since come out with a statement, denying that he took any PEDs, saying he was a “Complete surprise” that he’s failed the test. He pointed out that he’d passed tests during camp for the Bruno Surace fight. Munguia stated that he would have his B-sample tested.

Fans view Munguia’s positive test as a sign that something is fishy going on under trainer Eddy Reynoso, who is Canelo, Munguia, and other popular fighters who have failed drug tests. Users on social feel that this makes the team look suspect. Many of them find it difficult to believe that Reynoso doesn’t know what’s happening with fighters like Munguia.

Canelo Defends Munguia

“We believe in Jaime Munguia, who will surely clarify this soon. And what I want you to be very clear about is that Canelo Team isn’t giving him his supplements; Eddy is solely dedicated to training him,” said Canelo Alvarez in a statement about his teammate Jaime Munguia’s positive PED test for his May 3rd rematch against Bruno Surace in Riyadh.

“We’re 100% behind Munguía. Only he knows what happened. They’re throwing it at Eddy, but he doesn’t provide his nutrition. Eddy is just his coach,” said Canelo.

Canelo Shifts Test Blame

Alvarez is putting the responsibility of the positive test on Munguia. However, fans are suspicious of Reynoso because his fighters, Canelo and Oscar Valdez, have tested positive for PEDs in the past.
