FABIAN SCHAR could be in line for a shock return to Germany from Newcastle United.
The 33-year-old is in the last year of his deal and is free to pen a pre-contract agreement with a club from overseas in January.
Sun Sport understands that a number of Bundesliga sides have identified the defender as a potential target.
That could leave Magpies boss Eddie Howe and new sporting director Ross Wilson with a difficult decision to make should an offer arrive once the transfer window opens.
For now Schar remains a key member of the Newcastle first-team squad, but given the club’s previous PSR issues, they may be tempted to cash in come January rather than risk losing him for nothing in June.
Though, even though it may make sense financially to sell, Howe will be reluctant to lose such an important player mid-season – especially given their current struggles in the top-flight.

The ace was signed by Rafa Benitez in 2018 for a bargain £3m from Deportivo La Coruna and has gone on to make 239 appearances.
He and Dan Burn struck up a formidable partnership last term and were pivotal in ending the club’s 70-year wait for a major trophy and securing Champions League qualification.
Schar had started the first four Premier League games of the season but has lost his place to summer signing Malick Thiaw since suffering a head injury against Barcelona in the Champions League.
A potential Bundesliga return may prove tempting to the veteran, especially given the two years he enjoyed at TSG Hoffenheim from 2015.

Schar marked his last start with a goal in last month’s Carabao Cup win over Tottenham and afterwards he left the door open for a potential extension to stay at St. James’ Park.
The Toon legend said: “If that’s something that can happen, that would be good. I would be open to it of course. We need to see what the situation is and what happens in the next few weeks.
“I will just try to show what I can do with my quality, and the rest we will see. I have always proved my worth since I have been here so I’m just doing my part. “I was a bit unlucky with the concussion against Barcelona and being out when the team was doing well.
“We have so much quality and competition, it is not easy for the manager, I guess. But the only thing you can do is perform. I have tried to do my best.
“We have good strength in my position and a lot of quality. At the end of the day the gaffer needs to decide and we’ll see.”
