Boxing analyst Sergio Mora is siding with Terence Crawford to do the job by defeating what he views as the well-worn, slow-footed, undisputed super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez, on Saturday night in their blockbuster event on Netflix.
More Picks Crawford for an Upset
Sergio, a former 154-lb champion and a pure boxer, is picking the fighter with a style similar to his own, Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), to utilize his skills, jab, and mobility to outbox Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs). Sergio notes that Crawford is now of a similar size to Canelo after having bulked up.
Crawford didn’t have to put on as much weight as boxing fans think, as he reportedly rehydrated to the mid-170s for his last fight against Israil Madrimov at 154 on August 3, 2024. For Saturday’s fight against Canelo, Crawford could potentially rehydrate 13 to 15 pounds to 180+ lbs after weighing in at 167.5 lbs today at the official weigh-in.
“I like Crawford. He looks the size. He has the right tools to beat a fighter like Canelo, who has slow feet. He’s the heavier puncher. He has a lot of wear and tear, having been in many fights. Crawford, even though he is slightly older, has less wear and tear on his body,” said boxing analyst Sergio Mora to DAZN Boxing, picking who he believes is less worn, Terence Crawford, to upset four-belt 168-lb champion Canelo Alvarez in their legacy fight on Saturday.
Why Crawford Has Less Wear
Mora raises a good point about Crawford having less wear and tear on his body. Although he is older, turning 38 on September 28, he’s not been in the tough fights during his career due to the less-than-stellar opposition he’s faced.
The Secret to Crawford’s Durability
Terence fought at 135, 140, and 147 when these weight classes lacked the type of elite-level fighters with power that now compete in them. So, Crawford got through them without sustaining damage. He was quick to exit the 154 division after one grueling fight against Madrimov.
If Crawford had stayed at 154, he likely would have suffered a lot of wear and tear on his body that would have aged him, trying to defeat these dangerous fighters:
- Abass Baraou
- Sebastian Fundora
- Jaron Ennis
- Vergil Ortiz Jr.
- Bakhram Murtazaliev
- Yoenis Tellaz
- Erickson Lubin
