Ex-Tottenham star Troy Parrott consoled by team-mates after dreadful last-minute Panenka penalty to rescue a point

TROY PARROT had to be consoled after his dreadful last-minute Panenka penalty cost his side a point.

The former Tottenham star caught the attention of fans this month after his heroics for the Republic of Ireland.

Parrott, 23, netted vital goals in World Cup qualifiers against Portugal and Hungary, with his last-gasp winner in Budapest earning the Irish an unlikely spot in the 2026 Fifa World Cup playoffs, in which they will face the Czech Republic.

Unfortunately, Parrott was unable to continue his form for AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie this weekend.

AZ travelled to face FC Twente at the Grolsch Veste and found themselves staring down the barrel of defeat after Daan Rots scored in the 75th minute.

Parrott was presented with a great chance to earn his side a point as AZ were awarded a penalty in the dying stages.

But the striker was unable to convert from 12-yards as his dodgy Paneka effort sailed over the crossbar.

He immediately tried to hide his head in his shirt as Twente celebrated around him.

Parrott did receive some support from his team-mates who consoled him after the shocking miss.

Speaking after the game AZ captain Sven Mijnans insisted that Parrott is aware of his error.

He said: “He obviously has to make this one; he knows that himself. He’s converted a lot of penalties in the past.

“That’s why he’s number one on the list. Everyone saw that this was a crucial penalty in the final minute.”

Manager Maarten Martens admitted that the miss has already been spoken about among the team.

He added: “Of course we’re not happy about it. He wasn’t having a good day today, but we’ll definitely talk about it.

“But right after a match like that, I don’t think it’s right to start shouting about it.

“As a group, we’ve discussed it together.”

Parrott had been in good form in Holland this season with seven goals in nine league appearances.

He also netted another seven goals in the qualifying rounds for the Conference League.

His stunning form had seen him linked with a transfer back to England and to the Premier League.

Strugglers Wolves and West Ham have both been tipped with an interest.
