Ex-49ers superstar gets major guarantees in reworked deal with new team

The San Francisco 49ers made a blockbuster trade with the Washington Commanders earlier this offseason. The trade has yielded Deebo Samuel new guarantees.

The Commanders gave up a fifth-round pick for Samuel after he requested a trade from the 49ers. He was originally due $21.7 million, but the Commanders have reworked his contract, giving him $17 million in guarantees, according to ESPN’s John Keim. Samuel signed a three-year, $72 million deal after his All-Pro season, but agreed to restructure the deal when he joined the Commanders.

“Washington guaranteed $17 million of Samuel’s contract in 2025 and added $3 million worth of incentives, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Wednesday,” wrote Keim. “Before this move, Samuel had no guaranteed money remaining and was scheduled to have a base salary of $16,600,529 with a $200,000 workout bonus and a per game roster bonus of $44,117 worth up to $750,000.”

Samuel has 5,935 career scrimmage yards and 42 touchdowns. He was named an All-Pro in 2021 but saw his role with the 49ers decline as Brandon Aiyuk’s role grew. His rushing ability became obsolete when the 49ers acquired Christian McCaffrey.

On the Commanders he will join Terry McLaurin and Jayden Daniels as they try to avenge their NFC Championship loss with a Super Bowl berth. In a division that features the Eagles, the Commanders cannot have enough star players. Samuel will have the opportunity to show that he can still play at an All-Pro level.
