England boss Thomas Tuchel comes up with bizarre excuse for lethargic showing in 2-0 win against minnows Andorra

THOMAS TUCHEL blamed England’s lethargic display against Andorra on the lack of atmosphere inside the ground.

The Three Lions travelled to the West Midlands to play at Villa Park with Wembley unavailable.

Tuchel picked an experimental side with Elliott Anderson making his debut in midfield.

And it took England a while to get going before making the decisive breakthrough via an own goal in the 25th minute.

Declan Rice added a header in the second half but England failed to create many clear cut chances, despite having 83 per cent possession.

Tuchel was happy enough with the performance, but accepted his team could have done more to get the crowd going.

He told ITV: “It’s difficult – it’s a very different crowd to a Premier League crowd.

“I think we would have got the crowd going, but it’s very different and we know it.

“But I think the energy was right, quality was there, we should have scored more.”

Tuchel is expecting a more “emotional” crowd as England travel to Belgrade on Tuesday to face Serbia next.

He said of their next match: “We will try to prove a point – to win and put out the next performance, and to be tough in the circumstances.

“We expect a very emotional stadium, we expect an emotional crowd. We expect maybe, yeah, to adapt to the circumstances. We don’t know what the pitch looks like. Make no excuses.

“Then we come up against a very physical team. They will attack us in a man-to-man situation. This is what we see until now.

“They have high quality up front – international top quality up front – so they play very direct and we have to step up to this and adapt to the circumstances, adapt to the opponent and then prove the point that we’re a strong group, and we’re on the right way.

“Because I feel like we had an excellent five days now, and it’s on us now.

“Two days to prepare for Tuesday and hopefully prove the point there too that we are ready for that, adapt to what’s coming, accept the physicality, overcome the adversity and get another win.”
