Eddie Hearn Escalates Fury-Joshua Fight Over MSG

Eddie Hearn is taking his opposition to staging Anthony Joshua against Tyson Fury in America further than he has before, suggesting Matchroom may resist the proposed move until it becomes a contractual issue.

Madison Square Garden is being pushed as the location that would generate maximum revenue for the heavyweight clash. Hearn says Turki Alalshikh and Netflix favor America, while he continues trying to keep the event in Britain.

“We signed for this fight in the UK,” Hearn said to Fighthype. “We are desperate to deliver this fight for UK fans. However, everybody else wants the fight in America: Turki Alalshikh, Netflix. I can’t speak on behalf of Tyson Fury; I don’t see him kicking up a fuss. Madison Square Garden. So, they’re telling us this is the place it’s going to do the biggest numbers, this is the place it’ll be the biggest fight.”

Hearn has made his preference for Britain clear for weeks. What changes the discussion is how far he now sounds prepared to push the disagreement.

“I disagree. But at the end we’ll fight, and we’ll fight, and we’ll fight to a point where they’ve breached the contract by doing it in America, or we come to an agreement.”

That is strong language considering Hearn’s business relationship with Alalshikh and the number of major events Matchroom has staged with his involvement.

Hearn also admits the people on the other side of the venue dispute are key allies, making his willingness to discuss a potential breach of agreement more surprising.

His stated reason is loyalty to British boxing fans. But if Madison Square Garden really produces the bigger commercial event, Hearn’s resistance becomes harder to explain purely as a business decision.

There is also no indication that Fury shares Hearn’s resistance to New York. Hearn concedes he doesn’t see Fury “kicking up a fuss” about Madison Square Garden, potentially leaving Matchroom as the strongest opposition to the proposed move.

The dispute has therefore moved beyond a simple choice between Britain and New York. Hearn is now openly discussing how far Matchroom will go to enforce the agreement it signed.
