Eddie Hearn: Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul Fight a “Catastrophic Mismatch” But Financially Obscene

Eddie Hearn: Anthony Joshua vs. Jake Paul Fight a “Catastrophic Mismatch” But Financially Obscene

Eddie Hearn says Anthony Joshua would probably be willing to fight Jake Paul for a “big chunk of money” if the YouTuber pushes for the fight. Hearn acknowledges that the fight would be a “catastrophic mismatch,” but people would still want to watch.

Joshua’s Lucrative Path

Paul’s massive number of followers on Instagram and YouTube ensures that a fight between him and AJ would be a financial success. Joshua would face massive criticism from fans, but he could still make a fortune.

“He’s calling out Anthony Joshua, who is a heavyweight monster. I think Jake Paul is crazy enough to fight Anthony Joshua because the money would be absolutely obscene,” said Eddie Hearn to talkSport Boxing. “It’s a catastrophic mismatch that people would tune in to watch, because it would be the end of Jake Paul. It’s that dangerous.”

It would be a sick mismatch if Joshua were to fight Jake Paul, and even more so than when he fought then 0-1 Francis Ngannou in a match last year in March. That fight should never have been sanctioned as a professional match because it was unfair.

Jake is a lot more popular than Ngannou. So, if the purpose is for AJ to make as much money as possible before he leaves the sport, fighting Jake Paul is one way for him to achieve that. It would be a joke, but it seems Joshua is beyond caring.

Hearn Backs AJ vs Paul

“It’s a fight that shouldn’t really happen. They’re very clever in terms of the opponents they pick. It wouldn’t be surprising if Jake Paul wanted to move forward with an Anthony Joshua fight,” said Hearn. “Would he [Joshua] go in there and give him a hiding for a massive chunk of money? Probably. I’d be saying, ‘Yeah, go on. I’d like to see.”

Jake has already made it clear that he wants to fight Joshua. He didn’t look like he was kidding when he mentioned AJ’s name last Saturday night following his win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The only question is whether Joshua and Hearn will agree. In this interview, Hearn said he would welcome the fight for Joshua.

“Is he [Jake] world-class? Absolutely not, but he is improving. He’s a lot better than a lot of fighters out there,” said Hearn.

It sounds like Hearn is looking for an excuse to make a fight between AJ and Paul. Jake isn’t better than any of the top 15-ranked cruiserweights in the division, and that’s all that counts. He can probably beat some of the top 100 fighters in the division, but not many. To be ranked in the top 100, fighters have experience and have been fighting for years.
