It’s only been the first day of full-squad workouts for the Mets and Yankees but is there already a trade between the two teams in the works for Marcus Stroman?
SNY’s MLB Insider Andy Martino reports that that is not something he is hearing will be a fit and to not expect a return of Stroman to the Mets where he pitched for parts of two seasons.
The reason the thought was even brought up comes after the news of Frankie Montas‘ lat strain that will shut him down for 6-8 weeks, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed on Monday, which potentially opens up a spot in the Mets’ starting rotation.
On the other side, the Yankees have been reportedly trying to trade Stroman who is currently the odd-man out in their starting rotation and who made headlines in spring training last week by saying he is unwilling to be used as a reliever.
“Oftentimes for a trade like that to happen in spring training, there has to be an injury to somebody else’s rotation or a surprise fit opens up,” Martino said from the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa, Fla. on Monday.
However, the Mets “are not likely to fill that need externally,” Martino says, and instead plan to go to their depth that they fortified over the offseason — something Mendoza alluded to on Monday as well.
