Dolphins’ shaky roster leads to calls for rebuild starting with trading million playmaker

The Miami Dolphins are entering the 2025 season as one of the NFL’s most unpredictable teams — and it could spell trouble.

Head coach Mike McDaniel already appears fed up with the noise surrounding the team. On Wednesday, at the start of the Dolphins’ mandatory minicamp, McDaniel was asked how he felt about the ongoing trade talks involving cornerback Jalen Ramsey. While his response was reserved in tone, it was anything but bland.

“Personally — I don’t give a s— about what I feel,” McDaniel said. “I don’t even really go down that road of how I feel about it. My job is to react and control my controllables and make sure that people are moving in one direction appropriately. Business is business.”

Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post described McDaniel as “peeved, irritated and fed up.” And it’s hard to blame him — he likely sees the writing on the wall with this year’s Dolphins team.

For McDaniel to avoid landing on the hot seat, or worse, losing his job, Miami will have to overcome what Fox Sports’ Henry McKenna recently called a “hollow roster.” And yet, the team oddly features three skill position players with the profile of a true contender.

“The Dolphins are in the strange position of operating like a rebuilding franchise despite having a quarterback making north of $50 million annually and two wide receivers making nearly $30 million per year apiece,” Sports Illustrated’s Gilberto Manzano wrote, labeling the Dolphins as one of the losers of the offseason.

“They have injured pass rushers, an inexperienced secondary if they trade Jalen Ramsey and an offensive line filled with holes. After their aggressive trades didn’t pay off in recent seasons, it might be time for the Dolphins to blow up their roster — including trading Tyreek Hill.”

While no formal reports have linked Hill to trade talks, speculation has grown due to his visible frustrations with the team late last season and into the offseason. Dolphins general manager Chris Grier acknowledged that moving Hill was something the front office had at least considered, but nothing has materialized.

Hill, 31, remains one of the league’s most explosive wide receivers when healthy. If Miami did decide to make him available, there would be no shortage of interest.

Still, the reality is this version of the Dolphins has one of the more concerning rosters in the NFL heading into 2025. And it’s awkwardly obvious their own head coach is already well aware of it.
