Dolphins’ rookie lands million trading card deal after leaving million behind in college

The Miami Dolphins are preparing for another season with Tua Tagovailoa under center, hoping this year brings a healthy, injury-free campaign for their quarterback. Meanwhile, the team is still navigating uncertainty surrounding Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey. In Ramsey’s case, the Dolphins appear unwilling to pay his full contract, potentially keeping him on the roster longer than expected.

“The Dolphins appear unwilling to take on any of Jalen Ramsey’s guaranteed money to facilitate a trade. Teams are very interested in trading for Ramsey, but don’t want to take on his full contract. This is the current hold up,” Jeremy Fowler reported.

While that situation remains unresolved, the Dolphins took a step toward their future by selecting Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in the seventh round of the draft. Ewers will spend time learning behind Tagovailoa, even though he passed up significant NIL money to go pro. He could have stayed in college and reportedly earned close to $4 million.

“Ewers could have fetched easily over $3 million, and maybe even as much as $4 million with the right suitors in the mix considering Carson Beck’s deal,” Richard Johnson wrote.

Ewers is seen as a smart, composed player who can provide leadership to the Dolphins’ locker room—even if he’s unlikely to start unless an injury occurs. Despite leaving college early, Ewers quickly secured a major off-field win: a $3 million deal with a trading card company.

“Ewers announced on Friday that he signed an exclusive autograph trading-card deal with Panini. Per a source with knowledge of the arrangement, it’s a $3 million deal. Ewers took plenty of criticism for leaving at least $4 million on the table by entering the draft in lieu of transferring to the University of Miami. He’s currently 75 percent of the way there, in non-football earnings at the next level,” Mike Florio wrote.

With just one endorsement, Ewers has already earned nearly as much as he would have made in his final year of college. Financially, it’s starting to look like he made the right call.
