Dolphins’ Jonnu Smith trade talks with Steelers intensify day after agent seemingly shut idea down

The Miami Dolphins are looking to move on from Jalen Ramsey and his hefty contract, as the team edges closer to salary cap trouble. Ramsey is owed over $20 million for the upcoming season, and both sides appear ready to part ways. However, Miami is making it difficult for any team to negotiate a trade by refusing to absorb any guaranteed money.

“The Dolphins appear unwilling to take on any of Jalen Ramsey’s guaranteed money to facilitate a trade. Teams are very interested in trading for Ramsey, but don’t want to take on his full contract. This is the current hold up,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported.

Another player the Dolphins may be shopping is veteran tight end Jonnu Smith, who is coming off his best season in Miami. Smith was outstanding last year and is aiming to build on that success. The Dolphins have reportedly been in contact with the Pittsburgh Steelers about a potential trade.

Following the rumors, Smith’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, denied any trade intentions, insisting his client wants to stay in Miami.

“Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That’s his first choice,” Rosenhaus said, via Miami Heraldreporter Barry Jackson. “This is where he lives in the offseason. He had a record-breaking season last year… His dream team is the Dolphins.”

Rosenhaus made those comments on Monday, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter later shared information that contradicted the agent’s statement.

“Back in it: the Steelers renewed conversations today with Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a new contract. The trade between the Steelers and Dolphins is still alive, per source,” Schefter wrote.

The Steelers are in need of a veteran tight end, but Smith could also be a key asset for Miami heading into the season. It remains to be seen how the situation will play out. While there’s no doubt Smith would be a valuable addition to Pittsburgh, the real question is whether the Dolphins are truly ready to let him go. Despite Rosenhaus’ earlier remarks, trade talks appear to be heating up once again.
