Dolphins’ $72 million veteran could be the missing piece for Cardinals’ playoff push

The Miami Dolphins appear to be running out of options when it comes to trading veteran cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey and the team agreed to mutually part ways at the end of last season, but the Dolphins have been less than cooperative with teams interested in acquiring him.

“The Dolphins appear unwilling to take on any of Jalen Ramsey’s guaranteed money to facilitate a trade. Teams are very interested in trading for Ramsey, but don’t want to take on his full contract. This is the current hold up,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported.

Now, the bigger issue might be that Ramsey’s trade value is dropping. A significant factor could be that teams are increasingly viewing him as a better fit at safety due to his age.

“The more people I talk to, the more I think Jalen Ramsey’s value now really is as a safety,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote. “That, by the way, doesn’t mean he can’t play corner anymore. He can. It’s just that, at this point, if you’re bringing him in, leaning into what he still does well and planning on having him as more than a stopgap rental, then safety is likely where his future lies.”

So far, Miami isn’t expected to get more than late-round draft picks—likely on Day 3 of the draft—which is far below what the team hoped for and understandably disappointing. One potential suitor is the Arizona Cardinals, a team in need of depth and leadership at cornerback. With Sean Murphy-Bunting sidelined and Will Johnson’s college injury history, a veteran like Ramsey could fill a critical role.

“For the Cardinals, a trade for Ramsey could push the team further into playoff contention and near the top of an NFC West division that was competitive last season,” Yahoo Sports’ Griffin Goodwyn wrote.

A young cornerback room in Arizona could greatly benefit from a seasoned veteran with Ramsey’s experience. Only time will tell, but if the Cardinals make a move, they stand to gain significantly.
