Dolphins’ $212 million franchise-altering deal labeled one of the worst contracts in the NFL

Dolphins’ 2 million franchise-altering deal labeled one of the worst contracts in the NFL

The Miami Dolphins have several huge contracts on their roster, especially with veteran players. The two most likely candidates to be traded this year are Jalen Ramsey—almost certainly—and potentially Tyreek Hill if the Dolphins decide to rebuild. Ramsey has been seeking a way out since the offseason and is now very close to making that move.

However, whether Miami truly enters a rebuild hinges largely on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa—but not in a positive way.

“Hate even saying it because nobody wants to see it, but another major injury for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa would likely ruin his career and send the Dolphins into a rebuild,” Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon wrote.

The main goal for the former Alabama QB this season is simply to stay on the field. Tagovailoa has a history of concussions and other injuries throughout his NFL career. Although he has been the Dolphins’ franchise quarterback for some time, hope in his long-term success appears to be slowly fading.

“What is interesting is that Miami may not have the same confidence they had in him two years ago. They could have created $19 million in cap room with a simple restructure, but opted not to do so, citing they didn’t need the extra money,” Phin Phanatic’s Brian Miller wrote.

Meanwhile, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox argues that Tagovailoa carries one of the worst contracts in the entire NFL.

“The deal Miami offered Tagovailoa wasn’t logical. While he had stayed healthy in 2023, he had a lengthy injury history that included multiple concussions. Tagovailoa is one of the league’s most accurate and efficient passers when at his best, but he hasn’t made Miami a title contender or managed to consistently avoid injuries. He’s simply too much of a risk to be worth a deal that includes more than $167 million guaranteed and makes him the sixth-highest-paid player in NFL history,” Knox wrote.

Tagovailoa’s $212 million contract was the largest in franchise history. Next year is expected to be a challenging one for the Dolphins in terms of salary cap space, with this deal playing a major role in that struggle.
