For a team that didn’t make a change at head coach this offseason, the Seattle Seahawks have been rather busy before the start of the new league year.

They’ve fired offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb after one season and replaced him with Klint Kubiak. They’ve cut wide receiver Tyler Lockett, one of their franchise cornerstones, after 10 seasons. Then, on Friday, they sent quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders in a trade for a third-round pick.

Now, wide receiver DK Metcalf has requested a trade, and Touchdown Wire’s Jarrett Bailey recently predicted that they’ll ship him to the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Justin Herbert’s receiving corps is comprised of NBA players from the 1950s,” Bailey wrote. “Get him D.K. Metcalf as a deep ball option while Ladd McConkey eats underneath and gives the Chargers a balanced, dangerous passing attack.”

Metcalf, 27, has been great since the Seahawks took him in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft following his three seasons (2016-18) at Ole Miss.

In 93 games over his six professional seasons, Metcalf has caught 438 passes for 6,424 yards and 48 touchdowns while earning two Pro Bowl nominations and an All-Pro selection.

Last year, Metcalf caught 66 passes for 992 yards and five touchdowns in 15 games. Pro Football Focus gave him a 74.3 overall grade in 2024, ranking him 33rd out of 98 qualified NFL receivers. He also received a 75.0 receiving grade, good for 36th.

If the Seahawks were to move on from Metcalf, they’d have just Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jake Bobo, Dareke Young and John Rhys Plumlee left on the roster. Cody White (ERFA) and Jaelon Darden (RFA) could also be back in 2025.

Luckily, they have over $60 million in cap space to make some moves, and depending on when they trade Metcalf, they could save another $10-18 million.

For Los Angeles, just a year after moving on from Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, their top two pass-catchers, a potential duo of Metcalf and McConkey might be Herbert’s best weapons yet. It might not be enough to dethrone Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs from the top of the AFC West, but it could help them make it past the Wild Card round in 2025.
