‘Disciple’ Michael Carrick tipped to lean on Sir Alex Ferguson as ‘vibe’ changes overnight at Old Trafford

MICHAEL CARRICK knows what it takes to manage Manchester United and he can lean on Sir Alex Ferguson for help, says Teddy Sheringham.

The former Red Devils striker has been impressed by Carrick since he was appointed interim boss at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Carrick began his reign with a 2-0 win over rivals Manchester City as his side produced one of their best performances in recent years.

And ahead of a trip to league leaders Arsenal, Sheringham believes the new boss has already shifted the feeling at the club.

He told SunSport via BetMGM: “All of a sudden, that vibe has changed with Michael Carrick going in there and getting a result against Man City.

“I quite like the fact they’ve got Carrick in there. I love his manner.

“I think he’ll get a lot of help from Sir Alex Ferguson, being one of his disciples over the years. And I think it will be very helpful to have him around as well.

“I don’t go on what other people are saying, that he’s not the right person to have around after all these years.

“I think any influence in a positive way would be great for Manchester United and for Michael Carrick.”

Carrick’s appointment was met with criticism from Roy Keane, who questioned the interview process.

Keane also accused Fergie of hanging around like a bad smell.

Sheringham dismisses that view and believes knowing the club and understanding what the fans want is a recipe for success.

He added: “I think it’s very important. It’s obviously not the be-all and end-all, but I like his manner, the way he’s gone in there.

“I think he understands the football club. He understands the way the supporters want the game to be played in that United vein.

“People talk about DNA. I’m not really sure about what that means all the time.

“But we knew when we were at United in the late 90s that supporters expected to play a certain way, to be attacking most of the time and take the game to the opposition. And Michael knows that.”
