Cleveland Browns wide receiver Diontae Johnson has made his pick for who he thinks will be the team’s starting quarterback, and it may surprise you.
Johnson was a guest on the Sports and Suits podcast and was asked who he thought would win the starting quarterback competition between Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel.
Johnson ended up choosing Pickett, who was his teammate on the Pittsburgh Steelers when the pair were together there in 2022 and 2023.
“I think they’re going to roll with Kenny for right now,” Johnson said.
Why? Well, Johnson’s prediction is based on what he’s seeing in practice.
“I’ve been seeing Kenny going right now with the ones,” Johnson said. “Then, Joe will come in. I think they’re probably going to roll with him just coming off the season he was with Philly and having a Super Bowl.
“I think they’re going to stick with him through the preseason.”
After the Steelers jettisoned him to the Philadelphia Eagles in a trade, Pickett went on to win a Super Bowl, although he was just along for the ride, as Pickett served as Jalen Hurts’ backup.
It’s interesting Johnson didn’t pick Flacco, who is widely considered the favorite to win the job.
In fact, many expect Pickett, who hasn’t been all that impressive this offseason, to be cut or traded once he officially loses the competition to the 40-year-old.
That is the most logical approach the Browns can take in 2025. Flacco gives the Browns the best chance to win now, and the two rookies give some hope for the future.
