Diamondbacks activate Corbin Burnes to make his first start since June 1, 2025

The Arizona Diamondbacks have activated starting pitcher Corbin Burnes from the 60-day injured list. Arizona also added pitcher Kade Strowo from its Triple-A affiliate while optioning pitchers Gerardo Carrillo and Jose Cabrera.

Burnes has been sidelined since June 1, 2025, after needing Tommy John surgery to help repair an elbow injury. The starter had previously told reporters that he was hoping to be aggressive in his recovery and was targeting a return during the All-Star break.

It took a little extra time, but Burnes is finally ready to take the mound again and will face the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Burnes is in his second season with the Diamondbacks. The starting pitcher signed a six-year, $210 million deal with Arizona ahead of the 2025 season. Burnes does have an opt-out in his contract after this season. If he chooses not to use it, the pitcher is set to make $35 million a year over the next four years and will be under contract through the 2030 season.

Burnes has been in the league since 2018. He began his career with the Milwaukee Brewers and had a one-year stint with the Baltimore Orioles before signing with the Diamondbacks last season.

Over the course of his career, the righty has pitched in 210 games and has tallied a 63-38 record. Burnes won the 2021 NL Cy Young Award while with Milwaukee. That season, he pitched in 28 games and worked an 11-5 record with a 2.43 ERA, striking out 234 batters in 167 innings of work.

Before suffering his elbow injury last year, Burnes had made 11 starts. He had a 3-2 record and a 2.66 ERA.

Now, the veteran arm joins a rotation led by Eduardo Rodriguez, who is having a career year. The southpaw has a 15-5 record with a 2.55 ERA.

Arizona heads into Tuesday’s game with a 77-68 record, good enough for second place in the NL West behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks currently hold the third NL Wild Card spot with a half-game lead over the San Diego Padres.
