Trainer Abel Sanchez says Devin Haney has the tougher fight than Ryan Garcia for the Fatal Fury event on May 2nd, going up against Jose Ramirez. Ryan is fighting Rolando ‘Rolly Romero (16-2, 13 KOs).
Haney’s Test
Sanchez says the former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) will show what Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) is “made out of.” Abel says this fight will show whether Devin belongs up there with Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson.
No one has been comparing Haney to either of those guys because he was already struggling even before his loss to Ryan last April. Haney had massive problems with his fights with Jorge Linares, Vasily Lomachenko, and Alfredo Santiago. Devin’s problems are expected to get worse now that he’s fighting at 147 against guys that can punch.
Ryan exposed Haney as a hype job, and now Ramirez is going to cement that face by finishing him on May 2nd. Given that this is a mini-tournament, Haney will be eliminated and will not be fighting Ryan in October. It’s unclear who Kingry’s opponent will be, but I would suggest that WBO 147-lb champion Brian Norman Jr. be recruited for the job.
The former two-division world champion Haney’s fame was built around him becoming undisputed champion at lightweight, and he did that by beating George Kambosos Jr. Other than him, Devin has no wins over credible opposition. He carved a career out of beating the little ‘Emperor’ of Australia twice and winning a controversial decision over Lomachenko.
Haney vs. Ramirez. I think [Ryan] Garcia stops Rolly somewhere around the seventh or eighth round,” said trainer Abel Sanchez to Fight Hub TV when asked who would have the tougher time between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney with their respective fights on May 2nd on the Fatal Fury card against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero and Jose Ramirez at Times Square in New York City.
Top Tier?
“I think the Haney fight is a difficult fight. We’re going to see really what Haney is made of because Ramirez is going to give him a hard time. Robert [Garcia], his coach, will put a game plan together like he did for [Arnold] Barboza that will make it difficult for Haney. We’re going to see if Haney belongs at that top level, talking about Shakur and Gervonta and all those guys.
“It depends on how Haney looks in his next fight,” said Abel when asked who wins the rematch between Ryan Garcia and Haney. “If all of a sudden he shows us he belongs up there, that’s a difficult fight for Garcia because he’ll be smarter, Haney will,” said Sanchez.
