Devin Haney revealed today that the reason why he traveled to London for his ringwork was to meet with Turki Al-Shiekh to “talk about what’s next.”
Fans had wondered why Haney, 26, would conduct a ring workout in London when he has no fights scheduled and is coming off a humiliating loss to Ryan Garcia. It didn’t make sense until now. Devin came to meet with Turki, hoping to fight on one of his cards, and likely for big money.
Turki Talks
The recently beaten Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) is looking to fight on one of Turki’s Riyadh Season cards. However, Al-Shiekh tends to make competitive fights for his career, and that might be a bad thing for Haney because he’s shown to be weak in the chin department.
If Haney gets knocked out by someone Turki chooses for him, it will take a lot of the interest out of a rematch with Ryan Garcia. The fight could still happen, but it would seen as a joke. Haney would be ready for the junkyard, viewed as a hype job, who was never as good as the gullible fans had thought.
His best wins were against George Kambosos, Regis Prograis, and Vasily Lomachenko. As most know, Haney’s victory over Lomachenko was highly controversial in a fight he appeared to lose but was given a 12-round decision win in Las Vegas. Kambosos was just a flawed, low-level, one-hit-wonderone-hiit who built his career by beating a confused, ring-rusty, injured Teofimo Lopez.
Chasing The Payday
“I want to fight everybody. Y’all know I’m not into tune-up fights. I want to make the biggest fights happen. I want to fight the best fighter in the world. That’s one of the reasons why I’m here. I’m here to meet with His Excellency Turki Al-Shiekh to talk about what’s next,” said Devin Haney to the media today at his London workout, explaining why he traveled to the UK to show off.
“Turki made an offer to Teo for much more money than what his offer was. He turned it down for whatever reason, and that’s what stopped the fight. That’s a fight that can still be made. One thing that I’m focused on is I want to fight on an even playing field with everybody.
“I want to be a spokesman for clean boxing because I was one that actually experienced it. I experienced being cheated and what it’s like to fight somebody that’s on PEDs,” said Haney, talking about his fight with Ryan Garcia. “I want to clean up the sport of boxing. So that’s my man focus right now.”
