The New Jersey Devils are heading into a pivotal 2024-25 campaign. After riding high on the success of the 2022-23 season, last year saw the team fall well short of expectations, resulting in sweeping changes.
It wasn’t just the roster that faced an overhaul; longtime head coach Lindy Ruff was relieved of his duties on March 4th. Travis Green took the reins but struggled to find success and eventually secured a position with the Ottawa Senators, while Ruff found a new opportunity with the Buffalo Sabres.
Despite the shake-ups involving Ruff and Green, the remainder of the coaching staff, front office, and ownership have largely stayed intact—for better or worse. New head coach Sheldon Keefe’s emphasis on toughness, accountability, and consistency will set the tone for the season.
The Metropolitan Division is competitive, and a strong start is important for building momentum and confidence. Last season’s failure to secure a playoff spot is a stark reminder of the challenges ahead. The Devils’ 5-2-1 October record, followed by a 6-7-0 November, ultimately contributed to their seventh-place finish.
This year, the Devils are determined to break the cycle of disappointment. A successful October will solidify their position in the division.
