Deontay Wilder’s Match Against Herndon Is A Case Of Win Or Go Home

Deontay Wilder’s Match Against Herndon Is A Case Of Win Or Go Home

After experiencing a one-year layoff, the former WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder makes his return to the ring as he will face Tyrrell Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs) on Friday night, June 27, at Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas, streaming live on BLK Prime and PPV.com.

Wilder has experienced a rapid fall from glory as he’s currently on a two-fight losing streak. His opponent, Tyrrell Herndon, is aware of the fact that fighting Deontay Wilder is a big opportunity, and on fight night, Herndon plans on seizing the moment.

After making seven successful world title defenses, Deontay Wilder was set to defend his WBC belt against Tyson Fury back in December 2018. Wilder floored Fury twice, but after the 12-round contest, the bout was declared a split-decision draw.

Deontay Wilder would go on to score knockout victories over Dominic Breazeale and Luis “King Kong” Ortiz. On February 22, 2020, Deontay Wilder defended his title against Tyson Fury for a second time.

Wilder’s tenth WBC world title defense would be his last, as Fury stopped Wilder in the seventh round. Nearly two years later, Fury and Wilder fought for a third time, and once again Fury got the stoppage victory.

Wilder would bounce back with a highlight-reel style first-round knockout victory over Robert Helenius. He appeared to be back to his old self, but unfortunately for Wilder, a couple of trips to Saudi Arabia changed the trajectory of his boxing career.

Back in December 2023, Joseph Parker outclassed Wilder as he defeated him by way of unanimous decision. Six months later, Wilder returned to Saudi Arabia, and Zhilei Zhang stopped him in the 5th round.

Now the 39-year-old former heavyweight champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) finds himself at the crossroads, as he’s set to face an opponent who is an unknown. For Wilder, the June 27th bout is a tune-up, but for his opponent, it will be a career-defining fight.

After losing to Corey Barlow and suffering a fourth career loss, Tyrrell Herndon proceeded to go on a nine-fight win streak. Back in October 2023, Herndon was scheduled to face the undefeated Richard Torrez Jr.

Herndon stepped inside the ring looking incredibly unprepared as Torrez overwhelmed Herndon with his activity. It was a short night of boxing as Torrez stopped Herndon in the second round.

The San Antonio, Texas native Tyrrell “Too Real” Herndon bounced back by going on a three-fight win streak. Now he’s set to battle a former world heavyweight champion who is extremely dangerous.

Herndon is a strong puncher who possesses a good right hand, but his opponent is a hard-hitting fighter with a devastating right hand. Wilder’s last two losses came against opponents who were able to thoroughly outbox him and neutralize his right hand.

It’s very doubtful that Tyrrell Herndon is capable of thoroughly outboxing Wilder and avoiding Wilder’s big right hand all night long. Realistically speaking, the Wilder vs Herndon clash should be a brief match that Wilder ends spectacularly.

Deontay Wilder is a boxer who never possessed a potent skill set, but for several years, he was feared by many because he is potentially the greatest one-punch knockout artist in boxing history.

On the night of June 27, Wilder wants to dominate Herndon and preserve that potential big-money fight with Anthony Joshua. For the past couple of fights, Wilder has looked like a man whose heart wasn’t completely dedicated to the sport of boxing.

On Friday night, June 27, Wilder must rekindle his passion for the fight game. Losing this fight is not an option, due to the fact that the former WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is facing a case of win big or go home.

Wilder has split from longtime trainer Malik Scott, replacing him with Don House, a seasoned corner with a no-nonsense approach. The change signals a more aggressive reset.
