Promoter Oscar De La Hoya is predicting a knockout victory for Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), coming back from a one-year layoff in their twelve-round welterweight main event against the capable Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2nd at Times Square in New York City.

De La Hoya says the sport needs Ryan, bringing life to it with his warm-up fight against the former WBA light welterweight champion Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) to prepare him for a possible rematch with Devin Haney. Rolly will be useful for Garcia to get the rust out, as long as he doesn’t unleash his left hook smash too early in the fight.

Haney’s “Glass Jaw”

Oscar doubts the Garcia-Haney rematch will happen, because he believes Haney has a “Glass jaw,” and will be knocked out by Jose Ramirez in their co-feature bout on the Garcia vs. Rolly card on May 2nd.

The 1992 Olympic gold medalist and former six-division world champion De La Hoya has seen enough action to know a fighter with a glass jaw when he sees one. He sees Haney as a textbook example of a fighter packing class in his chin after watching him get decimated by Kingry on April 20th last year at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. We haven’t seen hide nor hair of Haney ever since. I just wonder where Bill is at? It’s weird how they both disappeared after last April.

“You have Ryan Garcia going up against Rolly, who is a one-punch phenom. He can knock you out with either hand, but Rolly knows how to promote himself. He knows how to get himself into the big fights. Even though he gets knocked out, he knows how to get himself these big fights,” said promoter Oscar De La Hoya to Golden Boy, talking about the Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero clash on May 2nd at Times Square in New York City.

“I feel strongly that Ryan will get the knockout. I’m excited about Ryan Garcia coming back. I think he’s great for the sport. Boxing needs Ryan Garcia. Without him, the sport is like, ‘Ahhh,’ except for my ‘Clapback Thursdays.’”

It goes without saying that Rolly is going to be knocked out in this fight by Garcia. Hopefully, Romero hangs in there long enough to give Kingry some rounds because he’s coming off a 13-month layoff and he needs to sharpen up for whoever he faces next.

“I think Ramirez will go out and knock out the glass jaw of Devin Haney. That’s exactly how it’s going to happen,” said De La Hoya. “Ramirez is a guy who stays in the gym, he stays ready, he’s focused and is no nonsense. So, he’s going to come after Devin Haney. This is his opportunity.

“Speaking as a fighter, Devin Haney, after being knocked out by Ryan Garcia, that chin is not going to be the same. That confidence, that heart is not going to be the same,” said De La Hoya.
