Panda’s Plan
Jay “Panda” Najar, William Zepeda’s coach, says it’s important that he win and look good in this rematch with Farmer because they’re looking for the next big fight. Panda didn’t want to say who they have in mind, but it could be a world title shot against WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson.
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn wants to make that fight happen next if Zepeda is victorious against Farmer. He would have already fought Shakur if he’d shined in the first fight with Farmer, but he labored to a 10-round split decision.
Zepeda couldn’t mow down Farmer with volume like he’d done with many of his other opponents because he was frequently being held by him and struggling with his movement.
In the co-feature spot, unbeaten WBO minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo (11-0, 8 KOs) faces Edwin Cano (13-2-1, 4 KOs) in a 12-round fight.
“We’re excited to be here. We’re excited to be in Cancun. This is an important fight for us,” said Coach Panda to Golden Boy Promotions about WBC interim lightweight champion William Zepeda ahead of Saturday’s rematch against Tevin Farmer. “We had a really tough fight in Saudi Arabia.
“We know that William has come back and made great adjustments. Not only William but the team, and we’re going to be victorious. This fight is important for us because if we’re looking for that next fight, we need to win this one.”
“I’m feeling sharp and feeling good. I’m happy to be back in Cancun,” said Farmer. “The last time I was here was four years ago was on vacation. This time, I’m here for business.”
