Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. says his son, ‘The Mexican Monster’ Benavidez, is back in the gym, and they have “Big news coming soon” for his next fight. It was reported yesterday that Dmitry Bivol vs. David Benaviez is nearly finalized for the summer.
Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) is the WBC interim and mandatory at 175 for Bivol’s belt with that organization. Now the question is, will Bivol take the fight to vacate the belt and head towards less treacherous waters to avoid a loss and get the trilogy fight that Turki Alalshikh wants against Artur Betebiev?
The Golden Ticket
If Bivol (24-1 12 KOs) loses his four belts to Benavidez, he’ll take much of the interest out of a trilogy match against Beterbiev. Boxing fans would expect him to fight a rematch with David Benavidez to avenge the loss. Also, without the four belts in his possession, Bivol has nothing to motivate Canelo Alvarez to fight him again.
The Mexican superstar has said that he wants to fight for the belts. He wouldn’t be eager to face Bivol if he’s coming off a defeat against Benavidez. There’s nothing Canelo can gain in that type of situation.
The “Big News”
“Back in the gym stay tuned big news coming soon @benavidez300 @aguaplusalkaline @team__benavidez @benavidezperformance #benavidezfightcamp,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. on Instagram, giving an update on his son, ‘The Mexican Monster’ David Benavidez.
Hopefully, the “big news” that Jose Sr. has about Benavidez involves a fight against Dmitry Bivol because that’s the golden ticket he needs to become the king of the 175-lb division and to get the other interesting fights against Beterbiev and potentially Canelo if he gets brave enough to want to move up to 175 to challenge him.
Some fans believe Turki Alalshikh doesn’t want Benavidez to fight Bivol next because he still wants the trilogy match with Artur Beterbiev. There is unfinished business because the two fighters are 1-1 a piece, but people would like to get a break from those two fighting again. Letting Benavidez get a shot would be ideal, but the downside is the potential of him beating Bivol. If he wins, it takes the air out of a trilogy match between Dmitry and Artur.
