The WBC cruiserweight title picture took another major turn Tuesday with David Benavidez reportedly being lined up to face interim WBC titleholder Michal Cieslak in November or December.
Boxing journalist Abraham Gonzalez reported the developing matchup hours after Zuffa Boxing announced WBC champion Noel Mikaelian will defend his title against Ring Magazine champion Jai Opetaia on September 12 in the co-main event of Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The timing of those developments is difficult to dismiss.
Earlier this year, the WBC ordered Mikaelian to fight Benavidez after approving the former light heavyweight champion’s petition to challenge for a cruiserweight world title. Instead, Mikaelian accepted a unification bout with Opetaia, placing the sanctioning body in position to decide if it will enforce its own order.
Should the WBC strip Mikaelian for bypassing Benavidez, the championship would become vacant. That outcome would leave Benavidez and Cieslak as the logical pairing to determine the next full titleholder.
The report follows conflicting claims that surfaced earlier Tuesday. BoxingScene reported promoter Don King said Mikaelian already had a signed contract for a proposed December 12 fight with Benavidez, while Sampson Lewkowicz said Benavidez was preparing to sign the agreement. Shortly afterward, Zuffa Boxing announced Mikaelian had committed to face Opetaia instead.
Neither the WBC nor Benavidez’s team has officially announced a fight with Cieslak. Gonzalez described the development as information from sources familiar with the negotiations.
An official announcement would provide the strongest indication yet that the WBC intends to strip Mikaelian and crown a new champion through a Benavidez-Cieslak fight.
