David Adeleye Gives Matchroom Domestic Heavyweight Option

David Adeleye Gives Matchroom Domestic Heavyweight Option

David Adeleye is expected to join Matchroom Boxing after leaving Queensberry Promotions, the company he represented from his professional debut in December 2019. The move gives Eddie Hearn another established British heavyweight for domestic cards, but it should not be mistaken for a major addition to Matchroom’s title ambitions.

Darshan Desai of Everything Boxing reports that Adeleye will be announced as a Matchroom fighter. The 29-year-old Londoner has a 14-2 record with 13 knockouts.

Adeleye’s best spell against Filip Hrgovic came after he was dropped in the eighth round. He climbed off the canvas and hurt the Croatian with a furious flurry, but the attack did not change the fight or provide much reason for greater expectations. Hrgovic recovered and won by scores of 99-90, 99-90, and 98-91.

That defeat reinforced what Adeleye’s stoppage loss to Fabio Wardley had already shown. He relies heavily on explosive right hands and counter hooks rather than establishing his jab. As Hrgovic forced him to work deeper into the fight, Adeleye’s output dropped, his feet became static, and he increasingly loaded up on single punches. His attacking options narrowed considerably while backing up.

Despite his two defeats, Adeleye remains dangerous at British level. His first-round stoppage of Solomon Dacres and sixth-round finish of Jeamie Tshikeva proved that opponents in that class cannot afford careless exchanges with him. Another British-title run would provide Matchroom with something concrete to promote without selling Adeleye as more than he has demonstrated.

His role resembles the one Dave Allen has filled for Hearn: a familiar heavyweight with personality, punching power, and enough vulnerability to produce entertaining fights. More than a year of inactivity makes an immediate fight against a dangerous domestic rival unnecessary. Matchroom can rebuild Adeleye’s timing with a lower-level opponent before deciding if he remains useful as a headliner or is better suited to testing younger heavyweights.

That makes him useful, but not transformative. Matchroom is filling a British roster need rather than adding a future world-title challenger.
