Danny Garcia’s Return: ‘Swift’ Eyes a Comeback Fight on October 18 at Barclays Center

Danny Garcia’s Return: ‘Swift’ Eyes a Comeback Fight on October 18 at Barclays Center

Danny Garcia will be headlining against a still-to-be-determined opponent on October 18th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Hopefully, for Garcia’s sake, he faces someone outside of the top tier in the junior middleweight division. He doesn’t look capable of beating any of the contenders at 154 at his age.

Garcia’s Fight After Lara Loss

This will be the first fight for the 37-year-old former two-division world champion ‘Swift’ Garcia (37-4, 21 KOs) in over a year since being stopped in the ninth round by WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara on September 14th, 2024.

Danny looked like he didn’t belong in the ring with Lara. Garcia hadn’t fought in two years going into that contest. It was a wrong-headed idea to challenge a talented fighter like Erislandy after that long a layoff.

“Danny García will return to the boxing ring on October 18 in the main event of his own boxing card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York,” per Brunch Boxing on X. “Top Rank will be providing fighters to help fill the October 18 card. The plan is to keep their fighters active while they work on securing a new platform.”

Fans don’t see any point in Garcia continuing to fight after the way he performed against Lara. That was Danny’s second defeat in his last three fights, and he looked like the shell of the fighter he was in 2017, when he lost his WBC welterweight title to Keith Thurman by a 12-round split decision. That fight took a lot out of both fighters.

Danny’s Comeback: A Question

The 18-year professional Garcia is too small to be fighting at 154. His best weight class was at 140, but it might be too hard for him to get back down to that division at his age. Even if he did, the competition is too good for him at his age. Even if Danny were in his prime, he’d have massive problems going up against fighters like Gary Antuanne Russell, Richardson Hitchins, Teofimo Lopez, and Subriel Matias.
