The Dallas Cowboys had a very disappointing third-place 7-10 finish in the NFC East last season, missing the playoffs. That led to another coaching change, with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer promoted to play-caller and head coach over fired Mike McCarthy.
Making matters worse, they were far behind the rival Eagles in the division (seven games) and also had to witness Philadelphia winning a second Super Bowl ring in a decade. There’s not much optimism for Dallas to end its ever-growing NFC championship drought.
Here’s the outlook for the Cowboys’ 2025 season with the new tough schedule in tow.

Dallas Cowboys strength of schedule
The Cowboys are right up there with the rest of the division with a brutal schedule that also features every team from the NFC North and AFC West. Based on the combined winning percentage of their opponents in 2024 (.557), they have the fifth-toughest slate, just behind the Giants and Eagles. Dallas also must navigate through facing 10 playoff teams from last season.
Toughest tests: Beyond the division gauntlet, they draw the Chiefs and Chargers at home to ruin things. The Packers are never easy in Dallas, too. Playing in the conditions of Chicago and Denver will make for tough games on the road, as does a bad indoor matchup in Detroit.
Biggest breaks: The Cowboys need to take advantage of their road breaks as a third-place team. They can win their games against the Raiders, Jets, and Panthers. At home, the Cardinals present their easiest foe.
Dallas Cowboys record prediction
- Over/under win total: 7.5 (per BetMGM)
Bottom line: The Cowboys aren’t positioned to be much better than they were last season. They have some key defensive issues and some offensive skill concerns behind a rebuilt line. Schotteheimer will try to stabilize the attack around Dak Prescott, but it’s limited, even with newcomer George Pickens added to the mix. They also can’t expect miracles defensively with Matt Eberflus implementing his scheme. The schedule sets the Cowboys up for a mild regression that can put them into last place.
Record prediction: 6-11
