The Dallas Cowboys need a backup quarterback after losing Cooper Rush to the Baltimore Ravens. They have been linked to New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton III.
Milton would require draft capital to acquire and the Cowboys are not in a position to be giving up draft picks. After staying relatively quiet in free agency, they need to find multiple impact players in the draft. Sports Illustrated’s Coby Skillern urged the Cowboys to re-sign Trey Lance instead of trading for Milton.
“When people have been suggesting backup quarterbacks for the Cowboys, the consensus has typically been to find a young player who could eventually take over for Prescott,” wrote Skillern. “However, by the time Prescott’s contract is up in Dallas, Milton will already be 28. Additionally, Dallas has already invested a high-end fourth-round pick by trading for former third overall pick Trey Lance.”
Lance started one game last season. He went 20-34 in the game with 244 yards. He is already familiar with the team and could slot in as the No.2 option instead of the No.3.
“Compared to Milton, Lance already has chemistry with the team, more experience, and is also the player with the higher ceiling,” wrote Sillern. “The time to draft a quarterback to develop behind Prescott is not this year. It would make more sense to wait a couple of years, ensuring that the rookie’s contract doesn’t expire at the same time—or even before—Prescott’s.”
