The Dallas Cowboys’ defense could look very different next season as they battle the salary cap and try to get back to the playoffs. Donovan Wilson will be a free agent after next season, but the Cowboys may be ready to move on.

Wilson has been with the Cowboys since 2019. He carries a $9 million cap hit for 2025 and FanSided’s Luke Norris urged the Cowboys to cut ties with Wilson this offseason.

“ln 2022, safety Donovan Wilson did exactly what you’re supposed to do in a contract year by having the best campaign of his career, racking up 101 total tackles, seven tackles for a loss, nine QB hits, 5.0 sacks, two passes defended, two forced fumbles, and an interception,” wrote Norris. “And for those efforts, he was rewarded with a new three-year, $21 million contract that included $13.5 million in guaranteed money. At the time, it seemed like a good deal. But there’s no getting around the fact that Wilson has regressed significantly over the last two seasons.”

Last season Wilson started all 17 games and had just one interception. In 2022 he had 101 tackles, but since then he has not recorded more than 88 in a season.

“While still solid in the pass-rush department, the 2019 sixth-round selection was atrocious in coverage this past season, allowing a 141.6 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks, the third-worst mark among all NFL safeties,” wrote Norris.
