Cowboys urged to cut million playmaker before the season

The Dallas Cowboys had a makeover in the running back room this offseason when they watched last year’s starting back Rico Dowdle head to the Carolina Panthers.

The Cowboys added free-agent running backs Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders, as well as two rookie running backs, Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah.

The Dallas running back room seems a little packed right now, and Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report thinks Williams could be cut before the season starts.

“The Dallas Cowboys signed running back Javonte Williams to a one-year, $3 million deal this offseason but could easily move on if he doesn’t outperform Miles Sanders, Deuce Vaughn, and/or rookies Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah in training camp,” Knox wrote. “Cutting Williams, who averaged just 3.7 yards per carry with the Broncos last season, would save Dallas $2 million in cap space.”

Williams spent the last four years with the Denver Broncos, rushing for 2,394 yards and 11 touchdowns in 54 games.

The Cowboys were smart to give Williams a deal when they did, since they lacked running backs, but now, with a few additions, it could be wise to let Williams walk and let the young running backs take over.
