Thanks to owner Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys are an unmitigated disaster right now. After a disappointing 2024 campaign, the Cowboys didn’t re-up with Mike McCarthy, who was no great shakes to begin with, and decided to hire Brian Schottenheimer, who literally nobody wanted.

Now, the Cowboys face an offseason in which they need to make major upgrades on both sides of the ball, with wide receiver being one of the positions that needs help.

The Cowboys have a great player in CeeDee Lamb, but not much else behind him. The Cowboys also don’t have a good salary cap situation, with the team being $2.2 million over currently, according to Over the Cap. Dallas will have to make some moves in order to rectify that situation before the team can make moves.

One player who could be available is Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens, who TWSN’s Marissa Myers believes will be traded to Dallas at some point this offseason.

“While on the outside looking in, Dallas doesn’t seem like a more attractive situation than Pittsburgh, but in Dallas, the quarterback situation is better,” Myers wrote. “With being in the NFC East, a division that seems to always be up for grabs, Dallas has the talent to turn things around quickly from their 7-10, playoff missing season, it will just take putting everything together under their new head coach in Brian Schottenheimer.”

There is at least a chance the Steelers look to part ways with Pickens in 2025. The former second-round pick has had behavior issues on and off the field and is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025.

Pittsburgh isn’t going to give Pickens an extension as a result of his missteps and may want to deal the oft-disgruntled wideout before he possibly leaves in free agency in 2026. On the flip side, the Steelers are badly short at wide receiver already, thus, trading the Georgia product would leave them even more shorthanded.

Pickens’ talent is undeniable, and he would immediately provide an upgrade for the Cowboys and would form one of the most formidable one-two punches in the NFL with Lamb. However, the Cowboys will have to weigh the same thing Pittsburgh does, and they’d be giving up draft capital for a player who could leave next year.

The Cowboys are well-positioned to extend Pickens if they trade for him, with Dallas projected to have $84.7 million in cap space in 2026. But, again, giving Pickens an extension would be a risky proposition.
