The Dallas Cowboys expect Dak Prescott to be their starting quarterback for a long time, but he can’t enter a season without a backup.
After the 2024 season, the Cowboys failed to retain either Cooper Rush or Trey Lance, leaving Prescott solo for the time being in the Dallas QB room. And Prescott has had injuries in three of the last five seasons, so they can’t bring someone in that never expects to play.
Now that Prescott is the most expensive passer in the league, it will also be important to find a cost-effective backup. Those can sometimes be found in the NFL Draft, but this doesn’t look like an ideal year to draft quarterbacks late.
Fortunately, the New England Patriots may have a solution for Dallas.
On Saturday, Tony Camino of NFL Trade Rumors proposed that the Cowboys could send two 2025 fifth-round picks to the Patriots for 2024 sixth-rounder Joe Milton, who looked excellent in his lone start as a rookie, New England’s final game of the season.
“In what’s presumed to be a weaker quarterback class, Dallas would probably have to use a top-100 pick to bring in talent with upside who can back up Prescott for the near future,” Camino wrote.

“Instead, the Cowboys could look to use two of their three fifth-round picks to get a player with more potential than almost every option in this class.”
Milton, 25, has arguably the strongest arm in the NFL, though he hasn’t had many chances to prove its effectiveness at this level. He’s also 6-foot-5, 246 pounds, and has the mobility and speed to escape pressure and generate some yardage with scrambles.
The question here is whether the Patriots will trade Milton into a situation where he’s expected to be the backup. And in fairness, there aren’t too many teams left that don’t have a starter locked in already.
