Jerry Jones wants to win football games, but his primary focus is making headlines.

The owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys didn’t make any splashes in free agency, but the upcoming draft could be a hotbed for the team to draw attention.

In a recent episode of the “Scoop City” podcast, NFL insider Dianna Russini reported that Jones has his sights set on two-way superstar Travis Hunter.

“I’ve heard Jerry really likes Travis Hunter,” Russini said. “That’s a very Dallas Cowboy move.”

Russini went on to add that just because Jones likes Hunter, it doesn’t mean he’ll give up the assets it would take to secure the elite talent.

The Cowboys are set to pick at 12 in the draft and Hunter is considered one of, if not the best, prospect on the board. It would require a trade with the Patriots at number four, Giants at number three, or even the Browns at number two to ensure Dallas gets their guy. The asking price for moving up that high likely starts with next year’s first round pick and a couple of day two selections.

Dallas is known for its conservative approach to player acquisition. Historically, the Jones’s would rather trade down and gain more assets than trade up for a big splash.

On the other hand, Jerry is known for chasing the spotlight. Not only would Hunter wearing the star garner media attention, it would mirror the role Deion Sanders played 30 years ago. Just like Sanders, Hunter wants to be a starter on both sides of the ball.

It seems unlikely, but Jerry has job security unlike any other general manager in the league. He can take risks with no concern of an owner or upper management cutting him loose.

There’s no question Hunter is a generational talent. The real mystery is if Jones is willing to forgo his conservative approach and push his chips in on the chance to secure his next Deion Sanders.
