The Dallas Cowboys’ rushing attack was one of the worst in the league last season. They could swing a blockbuster trade to land a new workhorse in their backfield.
James Cook is going into the final year of his rookie deal with the Buffalo Bills. However, the Bills may not be interested in paying him. They drafted Ray Davis last season and have traditionally relied on the draft to find running backs. Pro Football Network’s Sterling Xie tabbed the Cowboys as a potential fit for Cook in a trade.
“The Cowboys and Bears could use an upgrade at RB1 as well,” wrote Xie. “Dallas has a connection to Cook with Ken Dorsey, a Cowboys assistant who was Cook’s offensive coordinator in Buffalo from 2022 until he was fired after Week 10 of the 2023 season.”
Cook is projected to earn a four-year, $40 million deal in free agency. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and has scored 27 career touchdowns. Last season, he had 1,009 rushing yards and a league-leading 16 rushing touchdowns. In the last two seasons, he has also had 703 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns.
The Cowboys had the sixth-fewest rushing yards in the league last season. They signed Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, but neither player seems like a solution to their rushing woes.

Meanwhile, Cook’s desire to get paid could make him a trade chip, and the Cowboys could really benefit from adding him. He has proven he can succeed in the NFL and has been named to consecutive Pro Bowls for the Bills. Giving Dak Prescott a reliable running back could be a game-changer for the Cowboys.
