Cowboys blockbuster trade idea lands million, 1,081-yard star from Broncos

As the Dallas Cowboys look to turn over a new leaf in 2025, there’s no doubt that their offense needs serious reinforcements.

Beyond star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, there’s hardly any offensive talent on the Dallas roster that inspires confidence. Jalen Tolbert finished second on the team in receiving yards with just 610, an average of under 50 yards per game.

While the upcoming draft is one avenue the Cowboys could explore to find a number-two wideout, what if there’s an opportunity sitting in front of them to make a trade first?

On Wednesday, Landon Holifield of Athlon proposed a trade target for the Cowboys he believes is attainable: Denver Broncos veteran Courtland Sutton, who is entering the final year of his four-year, $60.8 million contract extension.

“Meanwhile, Courtland Sutton could be the easiest acquisition. The big-bodied Brenham, Texas, product also fits perfectly opposite CeeDee Lamb, and with Denver maybe in “re-tooling” mode, a third-round pick could get it done,” Holifield wrote.

“He’s due $20 million this year which is still cheap considering the current receiver market, and he’s an unrestricted free agent in 2026. The Broncos may elect to move on, continue their youth movement, and let the Cowboys bring (Sutton) back where it all started.”

Sutton, 29, had a fantastic season in 2024, showing all he needed was a decent starting quarterback to produce a big-time stat line. In 17 games, he racked up 1,081 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, both the second-best marks of his career in those categories.

Would it be worth the risk for the Cowboys to ditch a third-round pick, as Holifield suggests, for just one year of control over Sutton? It’s a high-risk move, but one that could take the offense to a new level.
