The Detroit Lions have been plagued by injuries throughout the 2024 campaign, with the team losing several key players, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

As a matter of fact, one of those players, running back David Montgomery, is set to make his return in the divisional round after suffering a knee injury in Week 15 that was initially expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.

“It’s refreshing,” Montgomery said of his return, via ESPN’s Eric Woodyard. “Kind of to be back in the position to where I can help the team, yeah, I missed it, so happy to be back.”

If the Lions can advance in the playoffs, there’s a chance they’ll get back two more players in the coming weeks in edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and cornerback Carlton Davis. Here’s the latest on both.

Aidan Hutchinson injury update

Hutchinson, who broke his tibia and fibula in Week 6, recently confirmed that he’s targeting a return by the Super Bowl. But, of course, that won’t matter if the Lions don’t win two more games.

“I’m on track for my goal of returning to the Super Bowl,” Hutchinson said. “I keep telling all the boys when I see them in the facility. I’m like, ‘You guys just gotta get there and I promise you I’m going to be back.’”

When asked about Hutchinson possibly returning, head coach Dan Campbell reiterated that Hutchinson has a season-ending injury but wouldn’t rule out the Michigan product making it back.

“He has a season-ending injury, but if anybody can come back from it, it’d be Aidan,” Campbell said last week.

If a return by the Super Bowl wasn’t possible, Hutchinson would not have made the comment he did. Chances are Campbell is tempering expectations just in case.

Carlton Davis injury update

Davis suffered a fractured jaw in Week 15 and was given a six-week timeline to return, which leaves the door open for him to get bac by the NFC Championship Game if the Lions advance.

However, Campbell poured ice-cold water on that idea, saying he does not expect Davis to make it back this season.

“I’d say nothing has changed. As of right now, it doesn’t look optimistic to get him back,” Campbell said. “Doesn’t mean he won’t, but I don’t foresee that right now.”

Again, this could just be Campbell keeping expectations low. Given the timeline for recovery from the injury, there’s at least a chance Davis makes it back, either for the NFC title game or Super Bowl.
