Conor Benn Has Built-In Escape Hatch For Ryan Garcia Fight, Says Simon Jordan

Simon Jordan believes Conor Benn may already have an explanation available if his return to 147 pounds ends badly against Ryan Garcia on September 12.

Jordan questioned the wisdom of Benn dropping back to welterweight for the first time in four years, especially after fighting Regis Prograis at 150 pounds and Chris Eubank Jr. at middleweight.

“Has he got a built-in excuse?” Jordan said on talkSPORT Boxing.

Jordan described what Benn can say if the weight cut takes too much out of him and Garcia wins.

“If he goes down to 147 and Ryan Garcia deals with him, he can turn around and say, ‘I was washed out of this fight at this weight. I thought I could do it, I can’t.’”

There is an obvious reason Benn is willing to take that chance. Ryan offers him a far bigger financial opportunity than the alternatives waiting at 154 pounds. Jaron “Boots” Ennis, Sebastian Fundora and Josh Kelly offer difficult fights without bringing the commercial appeal Ryan does. A fight with Ryan gives Benn the chance at another major payday after his two lucrative bouts with Eubank.

Benn may also see a physical advantage worth pursuing. He is naturally the bigger fighter. Provided the weight cut does not leave him depleted, he can put substantial weight back on after making 147, leaving Garcia to deal with a heavier opponent on fight night.

The upside makes the risk worthwhile. Make 147 cleanly, rehydrate, and Benn gets Garcia with a potential size advantage alongside a major purse.

If the weight cut drains him and Garcia wins, Benn can move straight to 154 pounds afterward. That is where Jordan’s point lands: the explanation for a loss at 147 is already available.
