Commanders predicted to sign former $4.4 million Raiders starter in free agency

Commanders predicted to sign former .4 million Raiders starter in free agency

The Washington Commanders added a potential starting cornerback in free agency this offseason, signing Jonathan Jones to a one-year deal worth $5.5 million.

Jones could end up serving as the Commanders’ No.2 boundary corner opposite Marshon Lattimore, but NFL Rumors’ Logan Ulrich predicts Washington will add to the position group by signing former Las Vegas Raiders defensive back Jack Jones.

“Cornerback is an area where Washington can use more help, so if any team makes sense to take a flyer on Jones, it’s the Commanders. Jones has shown that he has a knack for big plays but he has not shown he can be relied on down-to-down or even day-to-day during the week,” Ulrich wrote.

Jones started 16 games for the Raiders in 2024, snagging three interceptions with 16 passes defended. When at his best, Jones is an exciting player who can matchup with many top receivers, but he is incredibly inconsistent, and his effort can also be suspect at times.

The Arizona State product was released by Las Vegas during the first week of April and has yet to land on a team. The 27-year-old isn’t a high-level player and is pretty unreliable, but Jones could provide value to a contender, like the Commanders.

Washington could use more depth at corner, so signing Jones to a cheap deal to serve as a quality depth piece and potentially starter would be a savvy move from general manager Adam Peters. The Commanders still have nearly $23 million in cap space to work with after the draft.

Jones can be incredibly frustrating at times, but the former fourth-round pick still has some untapped potential, and the Commanders should take a flyer on him.
